HAYDN (arr. Ben Palmer) The Seven Last Words of Christ (arranged for string orchestra) world première

Hyunah Park • cello
Ben Palmer • conductor

Our all-Haydn programme for Good Friday opens with the pulsing, nervous energy and plainchant quotations of the 'Lamentatione' symphony, one of the finest examples of Haydn's exciting Sturm und Drang style. We are delighted to welcome Korean virtuoso cellist Hyunah Park to play the C major Cello Concerto, and proud to present the first performance of Artistic Director Ben Palmer's new arrangement of The Seven Last Words of Christ. Consisting of an introduction, seven miniature 'sonatas', and a rapid, violent musical earthquake, this sublime, meditative instrumental passion was first performed in Cádiz on Good Friday in 1783. This new version is a transcription for string orchestra of Haydn's original orchestral version, restoring the details omitted from the rather rudimentary string quartet publication of 1787, which left out much important thematic material and contrapuntal complexity.
